Meta Centre currently operates five day programs in locations across the Greater Toronto Area.

Our DAY Services focus on empowering and enhancing the quality of life of each individual we support.  We are committed to innovation and the access and choice of programs illustrates that.  Each Day Program provides a holistic approach that includes the following components;

  1. Recreation and Leisure
  2. Life Skills
  3. Community Inclusion
  4. Sensory Development
  5. Employment

Recreation and Leisure

Participants are exposed to a variety of recreational and leisure opportunities.  They include but not limited to dance and movement, Yoga, tactile arts and crafts, ceramics, aerobics, sports, fitness, music appreciation, drama, drumming and cultural outings.

We also address the following;

  • Leisure and Healthy Life Style Planning
  • Social Skills

Life Skills

The acquisition of functional skills as well as enhancing present skills is the focus.  These techniques will be taught both in a classroom setting and in the community.  Options include but are not limited to cooking, laundry, banking, pedestrian safety skills, transit training, safety at home, computer safety, household chores, self-care and hygiene, etc.

We also address the following;

  • Activities of Daily Living
  • Independent Living Skills

Community Inclusion

This component is integral to the entire model. Most of the skill acquisition described in the various components are learned and practised in the community where skills are naturally used.  Emphasis is placed on developing community linkages through recreational facilities, Special Olympics, community centres, libraries, several volunteer organizations, etc.

Sensory Development

This complements all the other components by providing participants stress management techniques, improved mobility and muscle flexibility, better circulation, strengthen the immune system, improve general health and give a general sense of well-being.  Sensory Development has been known to be a recognized form of treatment and is designed to give individuals a multi-sensorial experience to stimulate learning and contribute to appropriate social interactions.  Research has shown that multisensory environments offer a wealth of benefits, often affording the participant and caregiver an opportunity to improve communications, enhance their understanding of each other, and build trust in their relationship.

Goals of Sensory Development

  • To provide a stimulating environment to heighten awareness
  • To provide an interesting atmosphere to encourage participants to explore their environment
  • To provide an environment offering security, allowing participants mental and physical relaxation
  • To provide an unrestrained setting where participants feel able to enjoy themselves
  • To stimulate the senses in order to create a sensory picture
  • To stimulate the sensory building blocks that make up perception
